Fanmix for a Third Season
I was (relatively) less cheesy this time. I didn't use the word story, even though there's at least one song with it. And this time the images are actually have something to do with each other, so that's a plus. And it definitely ended up more up-tempo than it began, which was a bit of a surprise.

Not feeling particularly wordy (it's been a looong week, so thank God for the 3-day weekend), so I'll just say: here's the mix. Enjoy!

A Doctor Who Series Mix, V3: Man of Steel, Man of Heart(s)

*Sample lyrics and explanations*

3x00 - The Runaway Bride: The Last Town Chorus - Modern Love
But things don't really change
I'm standing in the wind, but I never wave bye-bye
But I try, I try...
Never gonna fall for modern love
Walks beside me, walks on by
Gets me to the church on time

[See you next season, Donna! Your complete awesomeness has yet to be uncovered, but it will, in a big way.]

3x01 - Smith and Jones: Port O'Brien - I Woke Up Today
I woke up today in a very simple way
In the morning all I could do was sing...
When you lose something like a golden diamond ring
You will know that it will show
The way the ocean always knows
Yes I understand I cannot live on this land
Does truly mean I have seen all that can be seen?

[Um...Martha woke up that day...in a simple way...but she's eager for adventure. Just jam, will you?]

3x02 - The Shakespeare Code: Dawn Landes - Young Folks
If I told you things I did before, told you how I used to be,
Would you go along with someone like me?
If you knew my story word for word, had all of my history,
Would you go along with someone like me?

[I know, I can't listen to the original version of this song anymore either. But I just
love this bluegrassy version so much, I couldn't help it. Anyway, Martha's starting to come into
her own as a companion, despite the Doctor's continued insistance that these are one-off trips.]

3x03 - Gridlock: Ghostland Observatory - Sad Sad City
Been getting tired of my motor running
Feeling overheated cause my life keeps coming
My heart's been troubled by the speed of love
Searching the streets for a soul committee
Talking ideas on lust and pity
The fables I've found have no place at home
Well I, need you, to want me, to hold me, to tell me the truth...
Ain't no party in a sad sad city

[A sad, sad city indeed. And it ain't no party....P.S. This song is totally
my jam at the moment.]

3x04 - Daleks in Manhattan: The Wombats - Moving To New York
I put one foot forward and ended up thirty yards back.
And am I losing touch or am I just completely off the track?...
So I'm moving to New York cause I've got problems with my sleep,
And we're not the same and I will wear that on my sleeve.

[WTF, this episode. We get it. It's the Depression. They're poor. Don't tell me that
20 times in 15 minutes. So, songs about cities it is then...]

3x05 - Evolution of the Daleks: Sufjan Stevens - The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts
Trouble falls in my home, troubled man, troubled stone
Turn a mountain of lies, turn a card for my life
Man of Steel, Man of Heart, tame our ways, if we start
To devise something more, something halfways
Only a steel man came to recover
If he had run from gold, carry over
We celebrate our sense of each other
We have a lot to give one another

[A very Doctorish song, I think.]

3x06 - The Lazarus Experiment: Martha Wainwright - Don't Forget
But in my silly mind I've gotten married to you
You're across town, don't even have a clue...
Don't forget that I will always love you
Just a reminder to help you pave your pathway
Fall it cools, winter it snows, spring it rains, summer comes
And you go
So when will we meet next and where will it be...
Cause time moves in circles and can leave you anywhere

[Oh, Martha. Don't worry, you won't be going anywhere unless of your own volition.]

3x07 - 42: The Mary Onettes - Lost
There’s nothing I can do to heal you if you let it all begin
There’s nothing I can do to please you
If I could run along beside you, never stop to look around
I would probably see the world through your eyes
And you say you have to be there cause you feel so ordinary
But you know how much you need me when the sadness comes for you
And I know you feel the weight that’s on your back
Can get you through when lost is all you have

[Martha's starting to take on more and more of the Doctor's burden, her toughest task to date impending.]

3x08 - Human Nature: Breathe Owl Breathe - Playing Dead
When I was playin' dead, I'd lie down.
I wouldn't move, though everything else was the swingset,
Kids playin' catch with their dads, no one noticed yet...
When I was alive I didn't know why I died.
I guess I thought everything was that way.
Your hair is grey, in other lights it's black...
And when you laugh, still brings me back.
And love, I got you didn't I?
I got you didn't I?

[Shades of the next episode, too, but this episode is really about the human version
of the Doctor, imaginary love and all, while the next gets into why he can't truly be
John Smith. (Also, what up, Jessica Hynes?)]

3x09 - The Family of Blood: Joe Pug - Hymn #101
And I've come to be untroubled in my seeking
And I've come to see that nothing is for naught
I've come to reach out blind, reach forward and behind
For the more I seek the more I'm sought...
And you've come to know me stubborn as a butcher
And you've come to know me thankless as a guest
And will you recognize my face when God's awful grace
Strips me of my jacket and my vest
And reveals all the treasure in my chest?

[This song has been in constant rotation on my IPod for a few weeks now, and it's the
Doctoriest of songs I've ever heard, and this episode (really, this whole season) delves deeper
into his nature than ever. This song doesn't have quite the "fire and ice and rage" aspect,
but rather focuses on that eternal wanderer archetype.]

3x10 - Blink: Bowerbirds - In Our Talons
And no, you're not alone. No, my cousins, you're not alone.
You're in our talons now, and we're never letting go.
You're in our headlights, frozen, and no, we're not stopping.
You may not believe, but even we were scared at first.
It takes a lot of nerve to destroy this wondrous earth.
We're only human; this at least we've learned

[Creepy moving statues. Moving on.]

3x11 - Utopia: Beirut - Elephant Gun
If I was young, I'd flee this town
I'd bury my dreams underground
As did I, we drink to die, we drink tonight
Far from home, elephant gun, let's take them down one by one
We'll lay it down, it's not been found, it's not around
Let the seasons begin - it rolls right on
Let the seasons begin - take the big game down

[Perhaps if Yana had a bit more of the of the Master's personality imbued in him, this song
would be more applicable, but I imagine nonetheless that there is a sense of being trapped where
he is now, longing for the glory of youth and big game hunting...or something.]

3x12 - The Sound of Drums: Longwave - Sirens in the Deep Sea
I've been trying to reach you
I've been trying to get through
It's so hard to let you know
I've been trying, yes it's true
You're the only one again, the lonely one again
You're the only one again, you are alone

[This episode was a bitch to choose a song for (I could do a whole mix on the Master and Doctor
dynamic), but the uptemponess and time signature (what is it, 7/8? Craziness) and the
emphasis on isolation clinched it.]

3x13 - Last of the Time Lords: Fleet Foxes - Your Protector
She left a week to roam, your protector's coming home
Keep your secrets with you, safe from the outside
You walk along the stream, your head caught in a waking dream
Your protector's coming home
As you lay to die beside me, baby, on the morning that you came
Would you wait for me, the other one, would you wait for me?

[This whole album is killing me right now, but this song in particular stuck out. I think it
totally fits both Martha and the Doctor, especially in the anticipation of her return to the
Valiant and right at the culminating moment of Saxon's defeat (despite the annoyance of it being
a "Messiah? Again?" moment).]
