Fanmix of Impending Doom
Free time, where has you been all mah life?
I seem to be drawn to the word "story" for my titles, but it's not my fault; the lyrics keep giving me phrases with that word. We'll see how it goes next time.
Same as before, a song for each episode in the second series. Corresponding episodes just in the liner notes, this time. The front and back covers don't go together at all, but whatever. I just sort of let each image guide me.
This one is a little weird - quite a bit more mellow than the first one. The whole series was just rife with HAPPY HAPPY, IMPENDING DOOM! and I guess I went a bit more with the happy portion. Anyway, enjoy the awesome tunes.

A Doctor Who Series Mix, V2: As The Story Goes
*Sample lyrics and explanations*
2x00 - The Christmas Invasion: Panda Bear - Comfy in Nautica
Try to tell me how to do it
Only because I'm new to it
Coolness is having courage, courage to do what's right
I'll try to remember always just to have a good time
Try to show me that you know me...
[A song about finding one's identity seems fitting for an episode in which the Doctor
spends his waking monologues doing just that. Rude and not ginger indeed.]
2x01 - New Earth: Rilo Kiley - Silver Lining
And I'm not going back into rags or in the hole
And our bruises are coming, but we will never fold
And I was your silver lining
As the story goes
I was your silver lining
But now I'm gold
[Cheesy, I know, but it's kind of ridiculous how giggly they are at the start of this ep, and this
is the most effervescent song I can think of at the moment.]
2x02 - Tooth And Claw: The Clash - I Fought the Law
Breakin rocks in the hot sun
I fought the law and the law won
I needed money cause I had none
I fought the law and the law won.
[They fight the law. The law wins. Yeah.]
2x03 - School Reunion: Beirut - Nantes
And I'll gamble away my fright
And I'll gamble away my time
And in a year, a year or so
This will slip into the sea
Well it's been a long time, long time now
Since I've seen you smile
[Aw, he missed his friend.]
2x04 - The Girl In The Fireplace: The Killers - Read My Mind (Like Rebel Diamonds Mix)
Slippin’ in my faith until I fall
You never returned that call
Woman, open the door, don't let it sting
I wanna breathe that fire again
She said I don't mind, if you don't mind
'Cause I don't shine if you don't shine
Put your back on me...
The stars are blazing like rebel diamonds cut out of the sun
When you read my mind
[There is mind reading involved...]
2x05 - Rise Of The Cybermen: Ghostland Observatory - Robotique Majestique
Well this heartbeat ain't for free
You gotta work you damn machine
You keep on runnin, you keep on fighting
You keep on going you damn machine
[IDK, there are robots? Suck it. I've no love for these two episodes. And I was
in a jammin' mood when I chose this.]
2x06 - The Age Of Steel: The Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)
I went out into the night, I went out to find some light
Kids are swingin from the power lines, nobody's home so nobody minds...
And the power's out in the heart of man,
Take it from your heart put it in your hand.
[Continuing with the industrial-sounding theme...]
2x07 - The Idiot's Lantern: The National - Fake Empire
Tiptoe through our shiny city with our diamond slippers on
Do our gay ballet on ice, bluebirds on our shoulders
We’re half-awake in a fake empire
Turn the light out say goodnight
No thinking for a little while
Lets not try to figure out everything it wants
It’s hard to keep track of you falling through the sky
We’re half-awake in a fake empire
[They're just in their own little world. Too bad they don't know about story arcs, or they'd
know that it's about to hit the fan.]
2x08 - The Impossible Planet: Tony Lucca - Devil Town
I was livin' in a devil town
Didn't know it was a devil town
Oh Lord, it really brings me down about the devil town
All my friends were vampires
Didn't know they were vampires
Turns out I was a vampire myself in the devil town
[Yeah, a bit literal. But it's an awesome song. (Though I seem to be looting the Friday Night
Lights soundtrack for this mix.)]
2x09 - The Satan Pit: Rufus Wainwright - Go or Go Ahead
Nowhere's now here smelling of junipers
Fell off the hay bales, I'm over the rainbows
But oh Medusa kiss me and crucify this unholy notion of the mythic powers of love
Look in her eyes, look in her eyes; forget about the ones that are crying...
Go or go ahead and surprise me
Go or go ahead and just try me
[Aaaaand then much less literal. The song itself is rather esoteric and trippy, which fits the
Doctor just fine.]
2x10 - Love And Monsters: Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova - You Ain't Goin' Nowhere
...They could not keep from keeping on
We'll cross that bridge after it's gone
After we have passed it, yeah
Ooowe, ride me high
Tomorrow's the day my bride's gonna come now
Oh oh, are we gonna fly
Down in the easy chair?
[Again, happy, happy, unaware of impending DOOOOM.
Plus, Elton's just about a comprehensible as a Dylan song.]
2x11 - Fear Her: Essie Jain - You
First time I saw you was when I knew
That I would give up everything for you...
Even if there was no radio, I'd talk to you
It doesn't matter if the lights should blow
Cause I'd see you...
And if I see you again
I know I'll never have to wait around for you
It doesn't matter if the brakes don't work
Cause I'll stop you...
[Worst episode ever, but whatevs. That doesn't mean the mix needs a sucky song.
The song feels very Rose (and perhaps even the Doctor, in their
oblivious state at the beginning of the ep).]
2x12 - Army of Ghosts: Basia Bulat - I Was a Daughter
Oh what a story
This is how they'll all remember me
We were the lucky ones that would survive the flood
With potted flowers in our blood
Pretending that we don't know where we bleed
All the pretty fall
We fell asleep but we couldn't hear their little words
We swam in the rivers, sang with the birds
Gave away our hearts before we knew what they were
[We're totally gonna be giggly and tra-la-laing forever and ever and...oops.]
2x13 - Doomsday: Rose - I Fill Up The Time
I'm feelin' the days go by...
I can't stand having any free time
To recall your smile
Not to mention your eyes
I fill up the time
And I forget to miss you...
I've figured out every hour in every day
Except tonight
[Rose, post D-Day, pre Bad Wolf Bay. The lyrics are perhaps slightly more bitter
(and more explicitly about a romantic relationship) than this context merits,
but I just think it's a very beautiful, very quiet, very sad song.]
